Borussia Dortmund's Marco Hummels has set a new record for the most goals scored in a Bundesliga season, cementing his status as one of the premier forwards in German football.
The Bayern Munich defender, who turns 29 next month, scored 25 league goals during the 2018-19 campaign, surpassing the previous record holder, Robert Lewandowski (24), by one goal.
Hummels' achievement came despite the fact that he had missed several months of action due to injury. He returned to full training in mid-August and quickly re-established himself at the heart of the team, scoring six goals in his first five appearances before reaching double figures.
The striker's impressive form was particularly notable during Borussia Dortmund's run to the UEFA Champions League final in May. In total, Hummels netted three goals in four matches, helping the club secure their spot in Europe's top competition.
Despite his impressive performance this season, Hummels is not resting on his laurels. The German international aims to break his own record in the coming years and continue his dominance in Bundesliga football.
"The best thing about being a professional footballer is that you never stop learning," said Hummels. "I'm always striving to improve and reach my potential. I'm excited to see what the future holds for me."
With Borussia Dortmund currently sitting second in the Bundesliga table, it remains to be seen whether Hummels will be able to maintain his current level of form and lead his team to success in the upcoming season. However, there is no doubt that he is one of the most talented and exciting young players in the game today.
